Why Affirmations Don't Work

Are your affirmations working for or against you? Do you say some life-affirming, abundance-attracting statement over and over…and over, and nothing changes? You’re unconscious mind may not be buying what you’re selling.

Anyone who’s been in sales knows there will often be objections to closing the deal. It’s part of the gig, and you learn how to handle them.  When we’re trying to make changes in our lives, there are often objections to that change – parts of us that are not in agreement.

Change! Do I really want to? Can I? Do I deserve it? What would it mean? The list can go on and on. And, when childhood programming is running counter to the affirmation, it can cause a shut down.

Neuroscientists say that only 5-10% of what’s going on in our brains is conscious and the rest is below the surface. Some have even said it’s as low as 2%. Think about it, if we were consciously aware of everything, all at the same time, life might be pretty chaotic.

So, it makes sense to have some information right below the surface, subconscious, that we can easily access, and have other information much deeper that is harder to retrieve, unconscious.

It’s those deeper, unconscious memories that can be a problem. That’s where those objections lie, our limiting beliefs. These are the internal stories we have about ourselves and the world, and they can interfere with the new messages we’re trying to program into ourselves.

If you were told that you’re not good enough or that’s how you interpreted your experiences, then your unconscious will run the I’m-not-good-enough program. I worked with many teenagers who were called “loser” by an angry parent. It leaves a mark.

Now imagine a small child getting imprinted with the same kind of message and the feeling that goes with it. As an adult, that feeling would be so deep that it becomes part of the operating system, often without a clear memory of where it comes from.

There are other stories that we take on, especially about money and success. These stories can be generations old and passed down in attitudes as well as DNA. Ancestors who only knew poverty can pass down their beliefs and their fears. So, if you have an unconscious belief that there’s not enough to go around, fear limits your possibilities.

Affirmations need the energy of a calm mind and positive feeling for them to work. We need to believe it’s possible, feel that possibility and create an energetic field around us, where that possibility can flourish.

EFT can help make your affirmations strong.

With some self-reflection and detective work you can get to the stories, and then shift their emotional impact with Emotional Freedom Techniques (EFT) or meridian tapping. If you are struggling with self-esteem, spend some time remembering what it was like for you as a child. What feelings come up? Use meridian tapping to neutralize the feeling. Now change the story.

For finances, what are your family’s stories about money; what did you hear while growing up? Are the messages mixed from one side of your family to the other? How do those stories or ideas make you feel? Again, use EFT to neutralize the feeling. Create a new story!
