What can I expect in my first session?
I ask new clients to fill out a brief information sheet with some questions about background and goals. I’ll ask what brings you to see me and we’ll take it from there…I am prepared to go where you want to go, as well as offer suggestions about what I see and hear. If you are unsure about what you want, because you have that “there’s something wrong, but I don’t know what it is” feeling, I’ll help you get to it – identify the problem areas and discuss options.
EFT is often part of the first session, because I’d like people to experience some relief as soon as possible and have a tool to use in-between sessions. I also teach breathing and calming exercises as well as body awareness techniques, as needed. If what you really need is to slow down and relax, you may have a vibro/neuroacoustic experience.
How many sessions will I need?
I am frequently asked this question and the short answer is “I don’t know,” but three to six sessions is not unusual, nor is weekly for a couple months. It really depends on what you have going on and how far/deep you want to go. I suggest you plan for three weekly sessions, and see how you feel. It takes about 21 days to break/build a habit. What new habits are you ready for?
How do I know if someone is the right counselor for me?
This is your healing journey; you’ll want to work with a professional, who makes you feel comfortable. Trust your instincts in this. The first impression matters, your initial phone call or email can tell you a lot. We humans come in all types and with differing styles; what works well for one person may really not work for another. If it is not a good fit, most therapists can refer you to someone else, who may be a better match. The important thing is that you feel respected. Your hopes and fears, dreams and concerns are important; it is a privilege and honor to witness your journey.
Don’t be afraid to ask for what you need! If you generally like someone, but wish they would slow down or get to the point faster, say so. A healthy therapist will applaud you or at least make a strong effort to accommodate your needs.
About fees and insurance…
I am a private pay therapist. One reason I do not participate with insurance is because I feel strongly about protecting my clients’ privacy. In order for me to bill an insurance company, I need to provide a diagnosis that goes into your permanent health record. Most of the people I see are experiencing stress, anxiety, and emotional overwhelm because of their life experiences, not because of mental illness.
Unlike traditional talk therapy, the service I provide, along with the tools and techniques I teach, generally provide relief in 3 to 6 sessions, not months of weekly counseling. My goal is to help my clients establish or regain balance as quickly as possible and develop the emotional resilience to weather life’s storms.
When there is true financial need, I offer a reasonable sliding fee scale.
