Toning is sounding the breath.

Simply breathe out with one long tone, on a single syllable, such as "ah". Toning for several minutes can bring about many positive changes, including a shift in brain-wave state.

I first learned of toning from a book by Laurel Elizabeth Keyes called Toning: The creative power of the voice, which clung to my hands, during a visit to a bookstore, one summer day in 1980. Keyes spoke of "freeing the body-voice," and I took her quite seriously, as I began to work with her ideas. Other investigations into the voice and healing led me to understand the importance of the pure vowel sounds. I learned to sound through the places where there were gaps in my voice, extending my range. I found that I could chase away headaches and relieve significant pain and discomfort. I learned that I could relieve stress and restore my good humor. And, I found that I could process old emotional wounds at a very deep level.

Spontaneous song frequently came out of my daily practice of toning. It seemed a natural extension of the freedom I was allowing myself to experience, by freeing my body-voice. I came to understand that when my body, mind and spirit are truly integrated, my soul sings.

My tonal practice has evolved over a period of twenty years. I refer to the whole of the various techniques that I use as vocal energetics, since I have come to understand that the voice impacts not only our general energy and brain-wave states, but our whole bio-field as well.
